The world of modelling.
Over the past few years I have been doing modelling and I have come across a lot of different things that people need to be aware of while trying to get into this industry so I thought I would share them with you all.
Because a lot of girls are so passionate about modelling and it seems to be every girls 'dream' there are a lot of scams and 'fake' modelling agencies that are around.. which try and get you to pay money to 'join their modelling agency' or offer you a professional photo shoot when they charge WAY too much money for you to have those photos!! Please all be aware that there are a lot of scams out there and you have to be careful with any agency that you join because it is very easy to get fooled and you COULD loose a lot of money.. do your RESEARCH, ask for RECOMMENDATIONS and NEVER pay out any money to join an agency.
Creating the 'perfect' portfolio.
Remember this.. You don't need to spend 1,000's of pounds trying to create a decent portfolio because a lot of agencies do not want to see loads of edited photo's that have been photo shopped to the max. What matters the most is how YOU look in the photo. You could easily use low budget photographers and still get amazing photo's. If you are SERIOUS about modelling there is a website called www.modelmayhem.com where you can create your own portfolio and look for photographers and make up artists in your area.. Some photographers will even do it for free if they feel it will benefit their portfolio. But please remember, do not be fooled with some photographers that offer to pay you to do 'topless' or 'underwear' shoots.. These are people you need to stay away from. If you are unsure on the photographer ask them to recommend a model they have previously worked with. Try and get some natural photo's with different looks such as different hairstyles and types of modelling such as fashion/beauty modelling.. Baring in mind that it depends what type of modelling you'd like to go into. Make sure you think about the poses you do in each photo.. Look natural, look confident, look professional.. If you do them things agencies will pick up on how confident you are straight away!! Try and get as many different looks as you can into your portfolio as this will show that you are able to do many of different types of shoots.
Applying for agencies - what if they don't reply?
Some agencies DO NOT ask for a professional portfolio.. they will simply ask for a natural head shot of you. So before you start applying for any agencies make you have a simple head-shot of your self without make up and have a clear view of your face.. Also be sure of your height and measurements because a lot of measurements will want to know about this. Don't be upset if they don't reply.. A lot of agencies receive too many applications and are unable to reply to all. Also, you may not be the right look for one agency but you may be perfect to another so NEVER give up. Keep trying, if it's mean't to be it will happen! The modelling inudstry is a real hard thing to get into because it is so competitive and so many people want to do it.. so you have to work hard for this! If they email back or ring you saying there is a charge to join the agency DO NOT do it.. THIS IS A SCAM. Don't give your credit card details to them !!!!! An agency will pay you to be in their agency. Always remember that girls!! Don't be fooled.
Pageants/competitions
Pageants are something that I've never been sure of, I always think that there are better ways to get into modelling without having to put yourself under so much pressure..I also find that other girls in these type of things can be quite bitchy towards you because it's so competitive and they want to win so much.. It can sometimes ruin your confidence and put you off and it's very rare that you will get a highly successful modelling career from doing one of these unless you are doing Miss England or something. Plus it can be quite expensive to afford those big dresses that they all wear and to get your hair done. Is it worth it? I don't actually think it is. The only good thing about it as SOME pageants give their money to charities.. which is great as it's for a good cause. I just think that it can be quite a challenge for somebody who isn't full of confidence and can be quite nerve racking.
There are a lot of 'Facebook' competitions that I see where you have to get all of your friends to like your photo and whoever gets the most likes wins.. Why? I don't see how this is fair. The most popular girls wins because she has way too many facebook friends/followers.. But there were probably a lot better than them who simply weren't as popular. This may seem an 'easy' way to get into modelling but some-times it's just for a prize and it's very rarely for a highly successful modelling agency.. and it can be very stressful trying to get every single person on your friends list to like the photo. It's just not worth it... I do like these competitions on websites though where somebody is actually chosen by a professional and you are offered with a years contract with a modelling agency.. Those competitions are a lot more worthy of your time so look out for those ones and make sure you apply.
If you are ambitious and have a passion for modelling, never give up.. some agencies won't reply but try others! Some photographers may not be what you are looking for.. But there are others. Get your name out there and gain some experience!
